i got this dress for a cruise when i was 15 my mom picked it out i am now a senior in high school and she's making me wear it what can i do to update it i am wanting to add some sparkle?

I've been looking for a prom dress. And I've found one but I can't afford it because it's a designer dress. And at the moment I don't have a lot of money, especially since I'm trying to save for a car and my mom isn't helping.
I am about to go looking for my prom dress. My parents gave me a budget of about $80. Can anyone give me any good tips to help me find a beautiful dress for a good price? I have never been shopping for a "formal gown" before so i do not know what to expect. My mom is not going with me because she hates to shop but I am taking a friend. Is that a good idea?
I'm homeschooled, so I never got to go to prom, but there's this homeschooler ball (think cinderella) coming up in three weeks and my mom is making me go. Since I've never been to prom/homecoming/winter formal, I don't have a dress so I was shopping around on eBay and found one for $5. LOL. It seems legit, and I bid on it and won. Anyways...IT'S RED. My mom is pretty old school, but she was all, "Oh, you know what red means...Why in my day at least red always meant 'lady of the night'". WTF? PEOPLE--IS THAT STILL YOUR OPINION OF RED PROM DRESSES? i've been looking everywhere on google and yahoo for prom dresses under $150 but none are proper enough they all look beyond short above the knee and i need something at least mom approve able. but not floor length because I'm 4 feet 9inches Im pretty short... i'll need something that fits me help please
